Frequently Asked Questions

This may vary depending on the individuals

If both individuals are South African Citizens the following documentation is needed:

  • Copy of ID’s of husband and wife and the two witnesses (not needed to be certified)
  • 2 x ID photos of husband and wife
  • Decree of divorce/death certificate (if it is a second marriage)

After the wedding ceremony, the couple will receive a handwritten certificate from the marriage officer. This certificate is known as the abridged marriage certificate. If the couple wishes to obtain an unabridged marriage certificate, they will need to apply for one from the Department of Home Affairs.

Once you have finalised your wedding date, particularly if it falls within the popular ‘Wedding’ season (September to February), it is recommended to take prompt action.

The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for registering the marriage once the necessary documents are submitted. However, it is advisable to wait for approximately six weeks before applying for a new ID to ensure that the marriage registration process is completed. This timeframe allows for any potential delays and ensures a smoother transition when updating your identification documents.

To ensure a timely registration of your marriage, it is recommended to submit the necessary documents at the Department of Home Affairs within three working days. This prompt submission helps expedite the process and facilitates the registration of your marriage.
